How to Sprout Onion Seed
Sprouts are nutritious and can be grown year around. There is no need for soil or even a garden bed--grow sprouts in your kitchen for daily use. Sprouting onion seeds gives you sprouts that have a mild onion flavor without the need to peel and chop up onions, as well as no need to plant a large onion crop. They provide fresh greens even in the coldest part of winter, a welcome addition to salads, sandwiches and other dishes. Does this Spark an idea?

Rinse onion seeds in warm water. Soak in the water for 24 hours or overnight to begin the germination process.

Drain seeds and place in a 1 qt. canning jar. Place a square of cheese cloth over the top of the jar and secure with a rubber band or canning ring.

Rinse seeds in cool water twice a day, then pour off the water. Place the jar in a dark place, such as a cabinet, between rinsing.

Remove the cheese cloth and fill the jar with water once the sprouts are ready to use--when the onion sprouts are approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches in length. Scoop off the seed hulls that float to the top, then pour off the water.

Pat sprouts dry with a paper towel if you won't be using them right away. Store in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Tips & Warnings
Green sprouts by placing the jar in a sunny window for one day before you plan to do the final rinse and store.
Start a new jar of sprouts every two to three days so you always have a fresh supply.
Purchase onion seeds specifically sold for sprouting, as those sold for planting in the garden may be treated with chemicals that are harmful if consumed.
