Sprouts are nutritious and can be grown year around. There is no need for soil or even a garden bed--grow sprouts in your kitchen for daily use. Sprouting onion seeds gives you sprouts that have a mild onion flavor without the need to peel and chop up onions, as well as no need to plant a large onion crop. They provide fresh greens even in the coldest part of winter, a welcome addition to salads, sandwiches and other dishes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jar
  • Onion seeds
  • Cheese cloth
  • Canning jar ring
  • Rubber band
  1. Step 1

Rinse onion seeds in warm water. Soak in the water for 24 hours or overnight to begin the germination process.

  2. Step 2

Drain seeds and place in a 1 qt. canning jar. Place a square of cheese cloth over the top of the jar and secure with a rubber band or canning ring.

  3. Step 3

Rinse seeds in cool water twice a day, then pour off the water. Place the jar in a dark place, such as a cabinet, between rinsing.

  4. Step 4

Remove the cheese cloth and fill the jar with water once the sprouts are ready to use--when the onion sprouts are approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches in length. Scoop off the seed hulls that float to the top, then pour off the water.

  5. Step 5

Pat sprouts dry with a paper towel if you won't be using them right away. Store in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Tips & Warnings
  • Green sprouts by placing the jar in a sunny window for one day before you plan to do the final rinse and store.
  • Start a new jar of sprouts every two to three days so you always have a fresh supply.
  • Purchase onion seeds specifically sold for sprouting, as those sold for planting in the garden may be treated with chemicals that are harmful if consumed.
