Grab your stud finder, and place it in the general vicinity of where you want the shelf to go. Be sure it is turned "on" by just dragging it along the wall slowly until it beeps, buzzes or lights up. (All stud finders function differently.) Refer to the owner's manual so you know what your stud finder will do when it discovers a stud.

Grab that pencil. Find at least two studs that are side by side and mark them. Be sure that the distance between the studs is a shorter distance than the shelf you are hanging. If you find this not to be the case, either get a larger shelf, or move the shelf to a new location so the distance is shorter between the studs.

Mark the location of the studs, and determine the height of the shelf. Hold the shelf up to the wall to get an idea of placement. Once you are certain of where you want to place the shelf, draw a line directly onto your wall from one end of the shelf to the other.

4
Look at where you marked for your studs. Position your shelf so that you have an equal amount of distance from one stud to the end of the shelf. Both ends should measure the same distance from the stud to the end of the shelf. Add a hash mark to indicate where the studs are directly above the shelf. Make a little hash mark directly onto the shelf.

5
Place your hardware into the wall where you marked your studs.Use the hash marks you drew on your shelf to line it up with the hardware. Hang your shelf. Secure it with a drill or a screwdriver.

Tips & Warnings
Each shelf is different and therefore comes with different hardware kits. Read the directions on your shelf kit to learn how to install the hardware properly.
Use a step ladder if you are hanging your shelf fairly high. Station someone at the bottom to hold it as you drill, measure and mark so you do not loose your balance and fall.
