The female hummingbird is responsible for making the nest for her eggs. Sometimes she will make two nests and test each one before deciding which one she'll use to lay her two white eggs. Wind, temperature and predators are all important factors in her decision. Here are some simple ways to spot a hummingbird nest.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for a tiny cup about 1.5 inches in diameter made of moss, lichen, plant fibers, cotton and dryer lint that's held together with spider webs and camouflaged with twigs, plant pieces and seed.

  2. Step 2

Check Y-shaped branches of tall trees or bushes. The branches provide stability when there are strong winds. The height discourages predators. If the female hummingbird doesn't find a tree or bush that is good for a nest, she may decide to build one in a crack or opening of a building or house.

  3. Step 3

Go to cooler climes. Because hummingbird eggs cannot withstand temperatures above 96 degrees, female hummingbirds often build nests sheltered by leaves to keep out the harsh sun near water, such as rivers or streams, where it is cool.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you spot one hummingbird nest, you may be able to find others nearby. Female hummingbirds tend to build nests where there were others built previously.
