Over the last few decades, personal computers (PCs) have become more and more ubiquitous. In developed countries such as the United States, people increasingly use them for everyday activities---from work to research to entertainment to socializing. It's easy to understand how a computer installed in your kitchen could come in handy, especially when you need to look up a recipe on the Internet or check e-mail while you're waiting for food to finish cooking.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Low-profile PC
  • Flat screen monitor
  • Wireless keyboard (optional)
  • Wireless mouse (optional)
  • Surge protector
  • Thick plastic mat
  • Counter-height stool or chair
  1. Step 1

Find an optimal location on your kitchen counter. You'll want to keep the computer away from any area you use to prepare food, to avoid getting the PC dirty (or worse). Keep it away, as well, from any area near water or where spills regularly occur, such as the sink. Consider putting the PC near the refrigerator so you can conceal the tangle of cords behind it. Also, remember it needs to be near an electrical outlet.

  2. Step 2

Plug the surge protector into the outlet nearest the location you've chosen for the computer.

  3. Step 3

Place the thick plastic mat where you intend to put the computer. This will keep it slightly above the level of any spills that occur.

  4. Step 4

Set the PC and the monitor on the counter or other surface you have chosen. Plug the power cables into the surge protector. If you are using the refrigerator to conceal the cords, carefully drape them behind it. Be sure to turn on the surge protector first.

  5. Step 5

If you plan to sit on a stool or raised chair while using the PC, put that in place now. You need a higher-than-normal chair because counters are significantly higher than most desks or tables.

  6. Step 6

Turn your PC and monitor on. If you use a wireless keyboard and mouse---handy because they reduce the clutter caused by cables---follow the manufacturer's instructions for connecting them.
