How to Estimate for Texturing Walls

Wall texture is among the most popularly used finishes for gypsum-type walls. This is a light material that is barely thicker than the paint that covers it and is usually applied in a fashion similar to spraying. The amount and cost of wall texture product can greatly vary between projects, depending mostly on the amount of wall to be covered. The easiest way to forecast this amount and cost is to perform an estimation, a task that can be easily and successfully completed in a couple hours (depending on the size of the project). Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of a wall to be textured using your tape measure. Multiply these numbers together to find the wall's surface area. You will need to subtract the area of any openings in the wall (doors and windows), as they will not be covered with texture; to do this, find the surface area of these openings in the same way you found the area of the wall.

    • 2

Repeat Step 1 on remaining walls, adding all of the walls' surface areas to find the square footage of wall texture you will need.

    • 3

Call your local home improvement store to receive a quote on the current price and coverage of texture material.

    • 4

Divide the total square footage of your walls by the square foot coverage per texture package; this will determine how many packages you will need (round this number up to the nearest whole package if you end up with a decimal).

    • 5

Multiply the number of packages you will need by their unit price to find the total cost of materials needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not already have the equipment necessary for texturing walls, you may have to either buy or rent equipment. You can consult with a specialist at your local home improvement store on which to do.
