How to Prepare Bulgur Wheat

Bulgur is a type of whole wheat that has already been cooked, left out to dry and ground into various sizes. The most commonly used size is medium bulgur. Bulgur is found in a variety of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes. It is simple to prepare and is commonly used as a main component of tabbouleh, a popular Mediterranean salad.   • 1 cup bulgur
  • 2 1/2 cups water

Instructions

    • 1

      Place water in medium saucepan on stove. Bring water to a boil.

      Place bulgur in separate saucepan that has a lid.

    • 3

      Pour boiling water in the saucepan containing the bulgur. Place the lid on top of the saucepan and let it sit on the counter for 30 minutes.

      Drain bulgur and use a fork to separate any grains that have stuck together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many different ingredients can be added to cooked bulgur to enhance its taste. If you desire to prepare a larger amount of bulgur, use 2 1/2 cups of water for every cup of grain.

  • If you do not let the bulgur sit for the full 30 minutes it may become gummy.
