How to Restore Clearcoat

Damage to your car often necessitates professional work and care to return the vehicle to its original state. But when the shiny clear coat on your car isn't damaged, just slightly faded, it seems pointless to pay to have a little bit of shine put back into the surface. Instructions

    • 1

Mix mild dish detergent into a bucket of warm water. Soak a washrag in the mixture and wash the car exterior to remove surface dirt and grime. Rinse well with clean water from a hose.

    • 2

Dry the exterior of the car with a clean towel for fastest drying. You can choose to allow the car to air dry, just be sure it is completely dry before proceeding.

    • 3

Apply clay bar cleaner if there are any rust spots on the clear coat. Clay bar cleaners are available at automotive and hardware stores, and they will remove rust contamination. Follow product instructions for application.

    • 4

Apply car polish to the faded clear coat. If you have access to a hand-held polisher, this tool will help to ensure an even and fast application of polish. If not, apply with a soft cloth, then buff with a clean cloth. The polish will restore shine to the clear coat.

    • 5

Rub car wax over the polished areas to provide a protective seal against future fading or damage. Rub into place with a soft cloth, then buff clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clear coat or paint damage will need to be repaired by professionals.
