A coat of paint can bring an entirely new look to an outdated, drab room. A few simple steps to prepare the surface of the walls before painting will help maximize the impact of your painting project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wire brush
  • Clean broom or dust mop
  • Joint compound
  • Latex caulk
  • Putty knife
  • Fine grade sandpaper or sanding block
  • Clean, dry cloth
  1. Step 1

Remove peeling paint and debris with a wire brush. Use a light, circular motion. Do not apply more pressure than necessary or you could cause damage to the wall.

  2. Step 2

Use a clean broom or dust mop to remove dust or cobwebs. In addition to the walls, pay attention to chair rails and baseboards, and make sure they are also dusted or wiped down with a clean cloth.

  3. Step 3

Using joint compound, fill in nail holes, nail pops or other small imperfections. With a putty knife or your finger, apply a small amount into the hole. Holding the putty knife at a slight angle, swipe across horizontally, wiping away excess compound. Apply again if you can still see an indentation in the wall.

  4. Step 4

Use latex caulk to fill in small cracks at the corner seams of the room. Carefully, cut off a small amount of the tip from the caulk tube. Apply a thin bead of caulk into the corner seam and lightly flatten with your fingertip. Allow all repair work to completely dry.

  5. Step 5

Once dry, go over the repaired surfaces with a fine-grade sanding block or sand paper. Use light, even pressure to achieve a smooth finish. Wipe repaired areas with a clean, dry cloth. Your walls are now ready to prime and paint.

Tips & Warnings
  • To prevent debris from coming in contact with rollers, paint pans or walls, clean up thoroughly before painting.
  • To enhance the true color of your paint choice, consider having your primer tinted in a shade toward the same color.
  • Use safety glasses when scraping away old paint or wallpaper.
  • Do not attempt painting projects alone if you will be using a ladder.
  • For large holes or structural cracks, contact a professional before attempting repairs.
