How to Apply for a Provisional Driving License

Getting a driver's license is considered a modern rite of passage for teenagers. Having a license allows the teen the freedom to drive where they want, within reason. However, most teens will only be given a provisional license that has restrictions attached. The application and procedure for obtaining a license, however, remain simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your state's department of motor vehicles to apply for a provisional driver license.

    • 2

Arrange to take any necessary tests, such as a written test or driver test. Ask a representative what forms you will need to fill out and where you can retrieve them. You can typically get driver license forms, such as a DL-44 form for California residents, from your DMV's website.

    • 3

Fill out the paperwork deemed necessary by the DMV to apply for your license. Take it with you to your appointment.

    • 4

Hand in the paperwork to the DMV agent. The agent will then direct you to your next step, which typically involves an eye exam, a photograph and a fingerprinting. You will also be given instructions for your tests. If you don't need to take any written tests, skip to Step 6.

    • 5

Take any written tests required. Typically the tests you will be given are multiple choice, and the topics depend on the provisional license you are seeking. Should you pass, you will be directed to your driving test.

    • 6

Bring your car to the area directed to you by the DMV. A DMV tester should appear and administer the driving test to you. Should you pass the test, continue to the next step.

    • 7

Relay the paperwork given to you by the DMV tester to the person the tester directs you to. You will then be given an interim provisional driver's license.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to follow to the letter any directions given to you by the DMV.

  • Your real driver's license should come in the mail in two to three weeks. Contact your DMV for information regarding the receipt of your card.

  • Some states only allow people to take the test a few times, after which they must wait until they are 18 to test again. Make the test count.
