A cement block wall is not the most attractive design element for your home, but there are simple solutions for enhancing their appearance. Decorate the blocks with paint or cover the wall with fabric for a completely different décor. Materials and supplies for transforming cement blocks are available at home improvement and fabric stores.

Things You'll Need:

    Decorating Cement Blocks with Paint

  1. Step 1

Clean the concrete blocks with a scrub brush before you decorate them with paint. Fill in any nicks or imperfections with cement filler. Follow the instructions on the cement patch for application and dry times.

  2. Step 2

Apply a concrete sealer and let it dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Purchase a sealer compatible with the paint you will be using.

  3. Step 3

Roll on a coat of latex primer and let it dry. If you are decorating your room with a dark color, tint the primer to match the topcoat and you may not need to apply as many coats of paint as you would over a white primer. If you are painting an exterior concrete block wall, purchase exterior primer and paint.

  4. Step 4

Apply as many coats of paint as you need to cover the concrete blocks completely. The color you select will affect this. Dark colors typically need more than two coats for complete coverage. Make sure you allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer's directions between each coat.

  5. Decorating Cement Blocks with Fabric

  6. Step 1

Cover your cement block wall or individual cement blocks with fabric for a complete room transformation. Select upholstery fabrics for their weight and durability; select exterior-grade fabric to cover outdoor concrete block walls.

  7. Step 2

Measure the area of the concrete you plan to cover. Cut a section of fabric to fit the space.

  8. Step 3

Apply the fabric to the concrete with spray adhesive. Allow the adhesive to dry.

  9. Step 4

Cut a strip of decorative trim to fit the perimeter of the wall at the top, sides and at the bottom. The trim will cover the raw edges of the fabric. Look for a variety of fabric trims at your local fabric or discount stores. For outdoor applications, select exterior grade trim or use wood strips.

  10. Step 5

Attach the trim strips to the fabric edges with a glue gun or with waterproof construction adhesive.
