How to Get Mildew Out of Material

Mildew can grow on clothing, furniture, or leather items, such as shoes. You should attempt to remove any mildew you notice immediately as mildew can make you ill. There are a few different methods that can be used to remove mildew from material. Mildew can be killed in a washing machine or by wiping the area covered in mildew. Which method you choose will be determined by the material that you are cleaning.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Laundry

  1. Step 1

    Fill your washing machine with the clothing covered with mildew.

  2. Step 2

    Add one cup of white vinegar into the washing machine.

  3. Step 3

    Run the washing machine on a cold cycle.

  4. Step 4

    Repeat this process once more.

  5. Step 5

    Wash and dry the clothes as you normally would.

  6. Non-clothing Material

  7. Step 1

    Spray distilled white vinegar onto the material.

  8. Step 2

    Get the bristles of the toothbrush wet by dipping them into a cup of cold water or running them under your faucet.

  9. Step 3

    Scrub the material with the toothbrush.

  10. Step 4

    Dry the material with a clean, dry towel or by using a fan.

  11. Leather

  12. Step 1

    Mix a cup of denatured alcohol and a cup of cool water into a bowl.

  13. Step 2

    Dip your cotton ball into the bowl.

  14. Step 3

    Wipe the material until you no longer notice the mildew.

  15. Step 4

    Dry the material by hanging it, wiping it with a clean cloth, or placing it in front of a fan.
