How to Stuff Cushions With Wool

Wool stuffing is an ideal choice for cushions. Stuffing cushions with wool creates a firm and sturdy cushion, well-suited for throw pillows, bench or hard-chair cushions or floor pillows. You can stuff cushions with wool batting or stuffing, wool scraps, or even clean, uncarded wool depending upon your needs, budget and what is available. Wool stuffing does have some special care needs; however, the ecological benefits and durability are well worth the extra effort.

  1. How to Stuff Cushions With Wool

    • 1

Choose cushions with a removable fabric cover and an inner liner for the most convenient laundering. Realize that a cushion stuffed with wool without a removable cover will require careful hand washing and a slow drying time.

    • 2

Prepare your wool stuffing to stuff cushions. Cut wool fabric scraps into short lengths to form a firm core for a very dense cushion stuffing. Break up wool stuffing or batting into short, loose lengths.

    • 3

Open the cushion. Work small amounts of stuffing into the corners of the cushion. Create a softer cushion stuffing by using less stuffing and fluffing the wool before adding it to the cushion.

    • 4

Add stuffing to surround a firm wool scrap core if you are including one in your wool-stuffed cushion. Fill the cushion with stuffing, until the desired firmness is achieved.

    • 5

Sew or zip closed your wool-stuffed cushion. Fluff well, stomping or jumping on a large cushion to spread the wool stuffing.

    • 6

Wash your wool stuffed cushion by hand in lukewarm water when necessary. Press excess moisture out of the cushion by rolling and blotting in a towel. Allow to air dry.
