How to Use Backgrounds & Borders in Word Documents

Sometimes, Microsoft Word can be a daunting and confusing application. Users can be challenged by every new release as the look, feel and access to features changes. Oftentimes, Word users will want to customize the look of their documents through adding backgrounds and borders. Adding these graphic elements can make documents look more professional while highlighting certain information.

Instructions

  1. Page Background

    • 1

      Open Word 2007.

      Left click on "Page Layout" tab.

      Find "Page Background" section.

    Watermark

      Left click on "Watermark" on the "Page Layout" tab.

      Select a pre-made watermark from the drop-down menu or select "Custom Watermark."

      For custom watermarks, select either "Picture Watermark" or "Text Watermark." For pictures, left click the "Select Picture" button and add in your picture. For text, decide on what text you want and how it is formatted (size, color, font, layout).

    Page Color

      Left click on "Page Color" on "Page Layout" tab.

      Select a color for the background of your document.

      Left click "More Colors" to select a custom color.

      Left click "Fill Effects" for more formatting options for your background color.

    Page Borders

      Left click on "Page Borders" on the "Page Layout" tab.

      Click on "Borders" tab to apply borders to a paragraph. Select the setting, style, color and width of your border.

      Click on "Page Border" tab to apply borders to a particular section of a document or the entire document. Select the setting, style, color and width of your border.

      Click "Shading" tab to apply background colors or patterns (which include both a style and a color) to a paragraph.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are not sure what you want, remember the Undo button or ctrl+Z can be used. You can experiment knowing that Undo is there if you do not like what was selected.

  • Do not use a shading or background color that is so dark you cannot see what is written. Change your font color to make the letters stand out if you wish to use a certain shading or background color.
