1
Take everything out of the closet. Separate supplies by category: games, craft materials, activities, puppets---whatever is in the closet that needs to be categorized and stored.

2
When you know exactly what needs to be stored, choose storage options based on size. Get rid of any cardboard boxes previously used for storage---if you can't see what's in the bin, it's not easily accessible. Use large, colorful, translucent bins for play sets and toys. Use smaller bins to create kits by category, including art supplies, crafts and CDs you might play during class.

Store worksheets, activity papers and lesson plans to use in the future in binders and sheet protectors. Categorize the binders by seasonal focus or holiday. Label each binder by category for easy identification, and use a color that corresponds with the holiday (i.e., red or green for Christmas, purple for Easter). Use matching magazine holders to keep workbooks and other curricula contained and in good, usable shape.

When you know what you have to store, assess the storage shelving in the closet. Is it adequate for what you need to hold? Shelves should be strong enough to hold the bins you've filled. Don't just stack supply bins on top of each other; designate each shelf for only one or two categories of supplies. Label each shelf clearly. Put larger bins on the floor. Place supplies you use most often at eye level for easy access.
