How to Draw Baby Faces

Baby faces are easier to draw than adult faces in that baby faces are simpler. There are still two eyes, two ears, a nose, a mouth, a head and a chin...but features become more defined with age. If you're an inexperienced drawer and need somewhere to start, you may want to look into baby faces and work your way up with age. When you're drawing baby faces, there are two things you should think throughout the drawing: innocence and simplicity. This guide will help you bring out that innocence and simplicity in your drawing.

Draw the face structure. For a face-front picture, draw an oval that's thicker height-wise than width-wise. The oval should be at most a 2:1 ratio. Remember, this is a baby face. Baby faces tend to be more rounded than oval-shaped.

    • 2

Draw the eyes. Simple eyes are almond-shaped; more wide than tall. Draw pupils round with a smaller round circle in the center. Shade in the bigger round-circle leaving the inner circle empty. Add thin lines around the almond shape for eyelashes. Keep eyelashes short as we are drawing babies-about as long as a dash. Add a slight curve on eyelashes for embellishment. If you're drawing closed eyes, then draw a downward half moon arched slightly downward. Add light curves above and below the eyes to indicate depth. Make eyes equal width spaced an inch apart.

    • 3

Draw the nose. Start with a T-shape drawn upside-down. For a chubby baby nose draw a volcano that opens up toward the base of the T and erase the middle line. The tip of the volcano should be about one-half inch wide. Draw lines at the bottom to separate the tip from the nostrils. For a thinner nose make tip one-quarter inch wide.

    • 4

Draw the lips. Start by drawing a football under the nose leaving about one-quarter inch to separate lips from nose. Draw a horizontal line to split the football. For a smile draw a curve starting at the left edge, going downward, and coming back to the right edge. For open lips add a curve starting at the left edge, going upward, and coming back to the right edge.

    • 5

Draw the eyebrows. Above the eyes draw a thin zig-zag line. For thicker eyebrows make the zig-zag line thicker.

    • 6

Draw the ears. Adjacent to the eyes, draw a thin C for the left ear, and an inverted-C for the right ear. Draw a couple of lines in-between the Cs and the side of the oval to give definition.

    • 7

Draw the hair. For curly hair, draw corkscrew lines at various places on the head; from the left ear around the head to the right ear. Many babies have a full head of hair up to 1-year old. If the baby is older than 1, then shorten the corkscrew lines. For straight hair, draw straight lines that straighten away from the face.

    • 8

Define the cheeks. Draw light circles below the eyes just outside the facial area as baby cheeks tend to be chubby at first. Erase the oval part of the face that overlaps the cheek areas.
