Permethrin is a synthetic chemical that has been widely used in the eradication of insects, including larvae like maggots. The chemical functions as a neurotoxin which affects the neuron membranes by prolonging sodium channel activation. Permethrin is also used in agriculture to kill parasites on chickens and other grain crops. While it is not immediately known to harm most animals or birds, it is highly toxic to cats.

Step 1

Scour the area for the heavy odor or stench that is created by the maggots. Spray the area heavily with the odor removal spray. This process will neutralize the smell while you begin the removal of the maggots. The spray will sanitize and act as a disinfectant to kill many types of bacteria, virus and other microbes. Wear your mask and goggles and gloves during this step so as not to breathe any of the contaminants.

Step 2

Spray the permethrin over the infested area to to kill off any maggots that may be hidden. Most maggots leave their main feeding source and can travel 5 to 25 feet away, so you will need to spray a large radius. Use a sprayer when applying of permethrin to disperse over the area of maggot activity thoroughly.

Step 3

Clean the area that was just sprayed with water.

Step 4

Spray a combination of pyrethrin and permethrin to kill off any remaining maggots. Pyrethrin will kill off any remaining live maggots; Permethrin will leave a residue keeping the infestation from reoccurring.

Warning

Permethrin is carcinogen and can affect the activity of the immune system. Laboratory tests have shown this in studies on animals. Permethrin is toxic to most beneficial insects and causes deformities and other developmental problems.
