Make a rough sketch before you begin the actual design. The design pattern is typically geometric in origin, with manipulations of the basic shape patterns. Make a few sketches before you begin, then choose one for further development. Study some examples of chip carvings, which often feature intricate designs of a Celtic nature.

Start simple. Use a protractor to draw lines, half circles and other shapes. Overlap some shapes until you see a pattern or design begin to emerge. Keep your lines light at first, which will make it easier for you to erase them as needed. Overlapping can help create design patterns you may not have considered.

Erase any overlapping lines that do not fit the emerging pattern. Think of it as carving your sketch, cutting away until you bring out the design. As the pattern starts to take shape, darken the lines you want to keep, then continue adding new elements.
