How to Decorate a Candle Holder for Christmas
Christmas is a time of festive celebration. Not only does it mean the smell of pie baking in the oven, but also breathtakingly beautiful decorations. For many, the lighted candle at Christmas time stands for home fires burning, the return of long-lost family and friends, and the heralding in of the season. While candle holders can be purchased practically anywhere, part of the fun of the holidays is being able to make one yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

- 12-inch round cake pan
- Small bag of white sand
- Pencil
- Glue
- Scissors
- Bags of clear marbles

- 1 roll of red satin ribbon to match the candle
- Red taper candle
- 6 floating candles (3 white, 3 green)
- Live rose petals
Instructions

1
Cut out a 12-inch cardboard circle. You may need to trace the bottom of a round cake pan to make sure the circle is perfectly round.
-
2
Place the empty 9-inch candle holder in the center of the cardboard circle, making sure it's centered. Trace around the bottom of it with the pencil.
-
-
3
Tie the pine branches together with the red ribbon. You may have to criss-cross the ribbon a couple of times to keep the branches in place. However, you don't want it so tight that it can't be formed around the base of the candle holder.
-
4
Tie the two ends of the pine bow together to form a wreath of sorts. Place it on top of the cardboard circle. You need to make sure that it falls between the outer edge and the inner circle you've drawn.
-
5
Trim the "stems" on the silk poinsettias so that they are short enough to be inserted into the ribbons that are wrapped around the pine branches. Stick six to eight flowers into the wreath. You may have to twist the wire stem around the pine branches and further tie it down with ribbon.
-
6
Slip candy canes into the branches of the pine bow once it's dry. Bury them in the branches so they stay in place.
-
7
Place the empty 9-inch candle holder into the center of the cardboard with the pine and poinsettia wreath wrapped around it. Make sure it fits snugly, but not so snugly that it can't slide in and out. Once you determine that the wreath will wrap around the candle holder, remove the candle holder and glue the wreath down the cardboard. Let the glue dry.
-
8
Add sand about 4 inches of sand to the bottom of the 21-inch vase. Then "plant" the vase into the marble bed.
-
9
Insert the red taper candle into the 21-inch vase. You'll likely have to maneuver and twist it a bit to get it into the sand.
-
10
Fill the 9-inch candle holder with the clear marbles. Drop them gently so you don't crack or break the holder. You want to create a bed of marbles. You'll be working around the 21-inch vase. The marbles should be a couple of inches deep so that the inner vase stays in place. Set this part aside for a bit.
-
11
Place the 9-inch candle holder gently into the center of the cardboard circle. Make sure that the bottom of the candle holder can fit snugly inside the confines of the wreath.
-
12
Put the candle holder with its wreath "coat" around it in the place where it will rest, such as the center of a table.
-
13
Fill the 9-inch candle holder---but not the 21-inch vase---with water.
-
14
Add the floating candles and the rose petals and light the candles when ready.
