Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface on which you wish to create a crackle finish. If it is a wall, sand any surfaces that are uneven. If the wall is scarred, patch the walls with drywall mud and a knife, then sand the surface smooth. If it is wood, sand the surface lightly to help the paint and the crackle medium to adhere well. Clean the surfaces thoroughly with a damp rag so no dust remains. Allow everything to dry before continuing.

    • 2

Mix the crackle medium according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use a brush to apply the crackle medium to the wall. Make sure you apply the crackle medium with strokes that go left to right in a horizontal direction. Allow the medium to dry for at least a half hour before continuing. Apply a second coat of crackle medium if you wish to have large cracks.

    • 3

Apply another layer of crackle medium, but with up and down strokes. When this layer has dried, apply a layer of paint over the crackle medium. Use a rag to dab the color onto the wall for a more natural look. You can even create depth by wiping some of the paint away after you apply it, making the surface look multidimensional.

Tips & Warnings

  • After you finish applying the layers of paint and crackle medium, you can apply a layer of acrylic to seal the finish.
