How to Create Kids Gift Certificates

Gift certificates entitle the bearer of the certificate to a monetary or non-monetary gift given by another to be used either in non-commercial (for example, a home or school) or commercial settings. Children enjoy receiving gift certificates for a wide variety of reasons including achieving excellence in grades or scholastic studies, completing chores, for holidays, birthdays or just because the giver wants to gift the child. Gift certificates designed specifically for children typically include kid-oriented/related graphics, text or photographs. Whether you need to create kids' gift certificates for yourself or your business, you can easily do so with templates.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your word processing or desktop publishing software for gift certificate templates. If you can't find a template to serve your purposes, check for free templates online--through software-related websites (for example, Microsoft Corporation's Office Online) or sites that offer free gift certificate templates like Gift-certificate-templates.com.

    • 2

Gather and scan or upload and save any graphics or clipart to use on your gift certificates. If you're making a gift certificate for your own child, another child in your family or the child of friends, consider uploading his or her photo (their photos if presenting to two or more childen) to use on the certificate.

    • 3

Insert your graphics, clipart or photo into the template; position and edit as needed. Most templates use layered objects so that you can delete existing graphics on a template and replace with your own. If you're creating kids' gift certificates for your business, also insert your logo somewhere on the certificate.

    • 4

Replace existing text with your own. Below are three examples--for your child, another child in your family or the child of friends:

"This gift certificate entitles you to a week without chores."
"Present this gift certificate for a GIANT hug."
"This gift certificate entitles you to a trip to (INSERT A FAVORITE AMUSEMENT PARK) on any day the week of (DATE)."

Three examples, if sold at a business:

"This gift certificate entitles the bearer to a $20 book from our Children's book section."
"This gift certificate entitles you to $10 of merchandise."
      "1 Video Game"

      Add:
      Presented to: (KID'S NAME)
      By: (NAME OF GIVER)

Include any addendums or rules involved with the gift certificate. For the first set of examples, you could include: "Two weeks notice must be provided for Amusement Park trip." In the second set of examples, you could include: "Paper certificates not honored without identification or parent present."

    • 5

Edit your font text or make any other changes to the layout of the gift certificate design.

    • 6

Print on photo or glossy inkjet paper and cut out your certificate(s) using scissors or a paper cutter. If you plan to print in bulk or through a copy center or professional printer, call ahead to confirm prices based on specific printing specifications (type of paper, number of copies, type of copies--black and white or colored and any other printing instructions) and take a saved copy of your design (see Warnings) physically to the location or email it with your printing request.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a small business and want to track all of your gift certificates, number each certificate sequentially and keep a record of the number and the purchaser's information.

  • Always save a backup copy of your design to a portable electronic file storage device throughout the design editing process or risk losing your work and starting from scratch. In addition, you can use it for professional printing and to make future edits such as inserting additional clipart designs for various holidays.

  • Always ask your lawyer, if selling gift certificates at your business, to validate the legality of any text or rules used on your gift certificate template before printing.
