The smooth, flat or ceramic cooktop is a versatile unit for your kitchen. A smooth cooktop unit can be built into an island or counter top. These cooktops also can be purchased as a stove and oven unit. You must take care of the flat surface cooktop that you have invested in to keep it looking nice and working properly. A variety of cooking pots and abrasive cleaners or powders will scratch the surface of the smooth cooktop. It is important that you know how to care for your smooth cooktop.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clean cloth or sponge
  • Nylon cleaning pad (untreated)
  • Mild liquid dish detergent
  • Straight edge razor blade
  • Cream cleaner
  1. Step 1

Wipe crumbs and excess grease from the stove top with a damp cloth or sponge each time you use the cooktop.

  2. Step 2

Clean a spill with a paper towel as soon as you possibly can while cooking.

  3. Step 3

Dampen a non-treated nylon pad and gently scrub burned-on food from the flat cooktop surface. Use a gentle dish detergent to help loosen the material if needed.

  4. Step 4

Gently scrape at a burned-on substance that has been covered with tap water with the side of a straight edge razor blade held on a slant. Be very careful that you keep pressure light to prevent scratching the cooktop surface. Wash the entire surface with a soft cloth and mild dishwashing detergent.

  5. Step 5

Use a smooth cooktop cleaner cream to polish the surface according to the manufacturer's instructions. Be sure to wipe the entire area with a soft, clean cloth to remove the cream as instructed on the product container.

  6. Step 6

Be aware that heavy pots and sauce pans can mar or scratch the smooth surface of your cooktop. Pick up heavy containers and move them from one burner to the other rather than sliding it across the stove. Keep spoons on a spoon holder to prevent build up of food debris on the stove surface.

Tips & Warnings
  • Turn a burner on to the lowest heating level when cleaning a hard to remove substance from the stove top with the razor blade.
  • Do not use your dish cloth on the smooth stove top because it can leave residue on the clear surface.
  • Never wipe the smooth cooktop surface with aluminum foil.
  • Copper pots should not ever be used on a smooth cooktop.
