Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the cake mix according to the instructions. Bake it in two 9-inch round pans and let it cool. Prepare the vanilla pudding and put it in the fridge. When the cake layers are ready, place one on the serving plate and spread the pudding on top. Cover it carefully with the second layer.

    • 2

Cut the loaf cake in half and slice one piece diagonally to form two triangles for the ears. Place them on each side of the dog's head, at the top, thick side up. Slice the bottom off one muffin and place the top toward the bottom middle of the cake for the puppy's muzzle and mouth. Cut the other muffin in half and place the straight edges against the bottom of the cake for the paws.

    • 3

Melt icing the color of your dog in the microwave on high. Start with 30 seconds, stir, then heat at 10-second intervals until you can pour it over the cake. Cover the cake, ears and muffins completely. If the icing runs onto the plate, scrape it up, reheat it and pour again. If your dog is light colored, reserve a small amount and color it with the dark food coloring to add the details. If your dog is dark, buy white frosting to draw on the details.

    • 4

Flatten the three spice drops into ovals with a knife or spoon. Place the spice drops for the eyes and on the muffin for the nose. Use light-colored ones for dark icing. Outline the mouth with a #5 tip. Cut one end of the red fruit leather the shape of the mouth and make the other end round for the tongue. Place it below the mouth and use the pretzel underneath to prop it up.

    • 5

Finish the puppy by drawing whiskers and spots or stripes on his fur with the #5 tip. Draw toes on the paws. Use the #16 star tip to outline the round cake face and the ears.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the leftover loaf cake for a doggy bone for the birthday boy. Leave the ends round and cut the middle narrower for the shape. Ice it the same as the other cakes and pipe his name on it.

  • Bake and freeze the two round cakes, ear triangles and muffin top the day before. They will be easier to assemble with fewer crumbs.
