How to Clean Auto Touch-Up Paint From Brushes

Auto touch-up paint usually consists of a solvent based paint. These paints are sometimes referred to as oil based paints. Oil based paints must be removed from brushes with chemicals, as using water will create a gooey, sticky mess. Be careful when working with automotive touch-up paint, and only work in a well-ventilated area, as the paint is extremely flammable and inhaling the paint fumes can be dangerous.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour enough mineral spirits into a tall drinking glass to cover the bristles of your paint brush.

    • 2

Place the paint brush in the glass and swirl it around three to four times in the mineral spirits. Remove the brush from the glass and examine it to see if the paint has been removed.

    • 3

Continue to swirl the paint brush in the mineral spirits until all of the auto touch-up paint has been removed.

    • 4

Squeeze a few drops of dish soap onto the brush and rinse it under running water to remove all of the mineral spirits from the brush. Squeeze the bristles as you rinse them to allow the water to penetrate the inner bristles.

    • 5

Squeeze the bristles to straighten them out into the proper shape and allow the brush to dry completely before storing it away for later use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear rubber gloves when using mineral spirits and avoid dripping the liquid on your skin, as it can cause irritation.

  • Keep the drinking glass with your paint supplies, or dispose of it to avoid drinking from it after it contained mineral spirits.
