One of the most critical parts of hanging a new door and installing the door handle is drilling the door stock for receiving the handle parts. Drilling a door handle is not overly difficult with the right tools and bit of patience in the drilling process. By following a simple step by step process, you can quickly and easily drill a door handle to fit securely in a wooden door.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Spade bit
  • Saw bit
  • 1-inch wide Chisel
  • Hammer
  1. Step 1

Secure the door handle template from the door knob packet to the edge of the door you are going to use to latch the door. Center the template on the area where you will be cutting the handle.

  2. Step 2

Use a pencil to mark the area on the edge of the door for the latch hole and also on the front side of the door for door knob body.

  3. Step 3

Use the drill and spade bit to drill a hole centered on the mark on the edge of the door to a depth of two inches. Use the saw bit to drill a hole completely through the width of the door on the hole marked for the handle body.

  4. Step 4

Use the 1-inch wide chisel to gouge out a trough 1/8th inch deep around the latch hole on the edge of the door. This will be for the strike plate to sit in.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a small file on hand to use to widen a hole if need be to help part of the hardware drop into place as it should.
