Instructions

    • 1

Isolate the exact location of the floor squeaks. In some older homes, a whole section may seem to be making noise when actually it is probably one or two active spots.

    • 2

Spread talcum powder along the boards or spots that are most active.

    • 3

Brush the talcum powder into the seams between the wood boards. Since these are often very fine cracks, you may need to sweep from several different directions. In small areas use a hand broom. The talc acts as both lubricant and filler.

    • 4

Sweep up the residue, and test the floor for squeaking. Repeat this until the squeak is gone. You may need to repeat this several times a year as the talc works down through the cracks.

Tips & Warnings

  • For hardwoods covered by carpet, consider pulling back a section of carpet and foam to expose the floor. Brush in the talcum and recover.
