How to Care for a Chaste Tree

The chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is an easy-to-maintain shrublike tree that grows well in hot climates. In order to thrive, the chaste tree needs direct sunlight and well-drained soil. Its purple flowers bloom from early May through September, and during that time it attracts butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. The chaste tree is both heat- and drought-resistant once it is established, making it an ideal plant for a low-maintenance garden. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a light application of fertilizer to your chaste tree in the spring, carefully following the manufacturer's directions. This will encourage flower production.

    • 2

Apply mulch in the spring or early summer months to help conserve moisture around the chaste tree, if desired.

    • 3

Use garden shears to cut off (dead head) faded flowers throughout the blooming season to encourage continuous blooming.

    • 4

Use garden clippers to prune off any dead limbs or branches in the winter after the leaves have fallen off the tree. The chaste tree can also be safely pruned back at this time if it is outgrowing its designated space in your garden.
