How to Install PVC Plumbing in a Kitchen Sink
When you're updating a kitchen by installing a new sink, you should also replace the drain plumbing. The old steel plumbing can be difficult to work with and will oftentimes leak. Once you know how to install PVC plumbing in a kitchen sink, you can complete the sink installation project. There are PVC drain kits available at all big box hardware stores. Wrap Teflon tape around the exposed strainer threads under the kitchen sink. If you're installing a double sink drain, grab the two drain tailpieces and the center coupler. Wrap the coupler's threads with Teflon tape.

Place a slip nut on each end of the tailpieces with the threads facing out. Insert both tailpieces into each side of the coupler. Position the tailpieces to the sink drains to make sure they line up correctly. If cutting is necessary, mark the tailpieces and cut them to size with a hacksaw. Dry fit the tailpieces to the drains by threading the slip nuts without tightening them down.

Place a slip nut around both ends of the PVC wall pipe and insert it into the drain pipe coming from the wall. Thread the slip nut over the wall pipe but do not tighten it completely. Place one end of the sink trap to the wall PVC pipe and thread the slip nut onto the sink trap.

Line up the other end of the sink trap under the coupler from the drain. Take the tailpiece that will connect from the coupler to the sink trap and mark where it must be cut. The tailpiece should fit 1 inch inside both the coupler and the sink trap. Cut the tailpiece using a hacksaw.

Place two slip nuts on the tailpiece with their threads facing each end. Slide the tailpiece into the coupler and the sink trap. Thread a slip nut to the sink trap and one to the coupler. Tighten all of the slip nuts evenly using a large pair of channel lock pliers.
