How to Wire an After Market Stereo in a 1998 Mustang
One of the most common aftermarket additions to any vehicle is the upgrade to the stereo system. The 1998 Ford Mustang is a vehicle designed to make the upgrade relatively simple. You can choose to have the installation performed by a technician at an aftermarket retailer, or you can perform the switch yourself, and save the cost of labor.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Ford DIN removal tools
- Faceplate installation kit
- 10 mm wrench or 10 mm socket and ratchet
- Wiring harness adapter

1
Disconnect the negative battery cable (or grounding cable) from the negative lead of the Mustang's battery. The grounding cable is the black cable that connects the battery to the frame of the vehicle. Use a 10 mm wrench to loosen the bolt of the grounding cable clamp.
-
2
The DIN holes are the vertically aligned holes on either side of the face of the stereo. Insert the Ford DIN removal tools into both of the holes in the factory stereo until they lock into place.
-
-
3
Pull the Ford DIN removal tools outward (to release the spring-loaded latches) and then toward you. The factory stereo will slide forward. Pull the stereo out to access the connecting wire groups in the rear of the stereo.
-
4
Pull out the connecting wire groups at the rear of the stereo unit by hand. The groups connect the stereo to the battery, amplifier, speakers and antenna.
-
5
Insert and slide the faceplate installation kit into place. Feed the wire groups through the back. The faceplate will click into place when fully seated. This will allow the new stereo to be seated in the stereo dock, as your new unit will not have the Ford DIN tool bracket.
-
6
Connect the wire groups from the Mustang to a universal wiring harness adapter. Connect the adapted wire groups to the new stereo (order of connection doesn't matter).
-
7
Slide the new stereo into the faceplate installation kit frame until fully seated.
-
8
Reconnect the grounding cable to the battery. Place the grounding cable clamp around the negative lead. Tighten the bolt using a 10 mm wrench. The bolt needs to be tightened only to the point that the clamp cannot be moved about the lead by hand.
