How to Design High School Homecoming T-Shirts

Homecoming is usually a week-long school celebration comprised of a football game, a dance and other student activities. Homecoming is a perfect opportunity to raise school spirit at the beginning of the year and create an inclusive environment in which all students can feel welcome. Providing free or inexpensive homecoming T-shirts for all students and staff will give a visual feeling of cohesiveness and add an easy way for everyone to get involved in the festivities.

Determine your limitations and know your budget. Contact the printing company you will use to produce the T-shirts. Tell the company representative your budget and how many shirts you would like printed. Ask how many colors you can include in the design for your budget. Also find out how they would like the design presented: Can it be hand-drawn? Should it be scanned and e-mailed? Are the dimensions important? Tell them your deadline and make sure they can complete the job on time. Finally, ask if you can see a sample before they print the whole batch.

    • 2

Choose the most important elements you would like to include, such as school colors, mascot, a school logo and anything about the opposing team's school you would like to include.

    • 3

Set guidelines, because whether you are holding a design competition, designing the shirt yourself or assigning an art student to do it, having guidelines will ensure the inclusion of key elements. Take the elements you decided on in Step 2 and make a list of visual and text requirements. You may want the designer to include a phrase on the shirt such as, "Slay the Spartans, Springville Homecoming 2010."

    • 4

Choose the design. If you have several to choose from, pick the one that most closely represents the requirements you set out. Does the design communicate who your school is, who you are playing and when the event is?

    • 5

Present the design to the printing company and make sure they can perform a job you will be happy with. See if you need to modify dimensions or colors and make sure they know where you want to place the design and text on the shirt. Make the final OK on your sample T-shirt before the final printing.
