How to Install a Double Deadbolt Lock
A double deadbolt, or double cylinder lock, requires the use of a key on both sides to open or lock the deadbolt lock. There are two types of deadbolt locks available: single and double cylinder. Single cylinder locks are the most common deadbolt lock, but for added security, especially on doors that are easy to gain access to, a double cylinder deadbolt will deter a break-in. The double deadbolt locks must be installed correctly in order to work properly. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Open the package that contains the double deadbolt lock, checking to ensure that all parts of the hardware are included. Lay out all the parts in order, according to the directions that are included.
-
2
Measure the thickness of your door, then carefully break off the tailpiece at the mark for the door thickness using two pairs of pliers--one to hold the tailpiece, and one to break off the tailpiece.

3
Align the tailpiece with the slot on the top of the cylinder, keeping the tailpiece vertical and with the curve of the tailpiece pointed to the right of the hole.
-
4
Keeping the tailpiece vertical, insert the outer cylinder through the collar and into the deadbolt. Make sure to align the slot inside the cylinder with the notch in the threaded collar; also make sure to keep the tailpiece vertical and curved to the right side of the hole.

5
Install the cylinder using the screws included with the lock. Tighten the screws, alternating between the two screws until both are tight. Do not insert the key on either side during this process.
-
6
Align the cylinder cover over the inside cylinder and screw on the decorative cover. Check the deadbolt lock with the key, making sure the lock operates on both sides. Close the door and recheck the lock to ensure the lock operates properly.
