How to Speed Up a 56K Modem
A 56K modem is a device that connects a computer to the Internet using a dial-up Internet connection. This type of device will be dramatically slower than even the slowest modern-day broadband Internet modem. If you can't afford the monthly fee of broadband Internet or have a computer that doesn't support the service, there are a number of things you can try to make sure you're getting the highest possible speeds from your 56K modem.

1
Unplug any devices that are using the same phone line as your modem. Having devices like fax machines, answering machines and even house phones plugged into the same phone line as your modem will slow down your Internet connection. Unplug all of these types of devices while your computer is connected to the Internet to help reach the maximum possible speeds.

2
Plug your modem directly into a wall phone jack using the least amount of cable. The longer a signal has to travel from "Point A" to "Point B," the slower it is going to go. Do not use devices like routers to connect your 56K modem to a home phone line. Connect your computer to a phone jack using only as much cable as you absolutely have to.

3
Close all unnecessary programs while using the Internet. The speed that your computer can process information obtained from the Internet is directly related to the available system resources at the time. Close any programs that are not integral to your Internet experience to free up system resources for your Internet connection.

Don't try to multitask. If you split your computer's Internet connection between things like instant messaging, checking email and loading web pages simultaneously, each of these tasks is only going to get one-third of your total Internet connection speed. As a result, they will load much slower than if your computer could focus on these things one at a time. Check your email, then completely load a web page, then instant message separately to increase speeds.
