While recovering most cushions is a quick and easy project, tufted cushions pose some special challenges. You can recover a tufted cushion, even reusing the trims and buttons if you like. Replace the fabric on tufted cushions to create a new look, preserve a worn cushion or make a thrift store find fresh and new for your home. You can even use these basic directions to turn any old pillow into a new tufted cushion to accent your living room or bedroom.
- Difficulty:
- Moderately Easy
Instructions
- Fabric
- Shank buttons
- Sewing machine
- Coordinating thread
- Quilting or upholstery thread
- Long upholstery needle
- Fabric-marking pen
- Sharp scissors
-
-
1
Pull the buttons used for tufting firmly away from the fabric, and snip the threads used to secure the tufting on your tufted cushion.
-
2
Determine whether the cushion has a removable cover or not and whether it is a stuffed or foam cushion. Remove the cushion cover by unzipping if possible. Plan to replace the cover on a stuffed rather than a foam cushion with the original fabric still in place.
-
3
Make a pattern for your tufted cushion cover. Trace the removable cover to form a pattern if there is one. Simply measure your tufted cushion if you are replacing the fabric without a separate cover, adding seam allowances to make a pattern to replace the fabric on tufted cushions.
-
4
Cut outer fabric to the size your need for your tufted cushion. Sew up your tufted cushion cover using your pattern. Add a zipper to the side of a gusseted cushion cover (see Resources). However, a flat-seamed tufted cushion will not have an opening in the finished cover.
-
5
Place the cushion into the cover. Stitch up the opening by hand if your tufted cushion cover does not have a zipper.
-
6
Mark the placement for the buttons on your tufted cushion. Thread a long upholstery needle with a doubled length of upholstery or quilting thread. Secure your thread at one side of the tufted cushion cover. Bring the thread up through the tufted cushion and attach a button on that side. Come back down, attaching either a second shank button or a small flat button on the underside of the cushion. Stitch both buttons securely into place, pulling the thread quite tight. Repeat for the remaining buttons to finish tufting your cushions.
