How to Find an IBS Doctor

Finding an IBS doctor--a doctor who treats irritable bowel syndrome--is easier than it may seem. Because sometimes the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can be easy to manage, you should start by talking with your regular internist or family physician. If the internist feels that your symptoms require attention from a specialist, you will need to see a gastroenterologist--a doctor who treats diseases of the digestive system. Your doctor can refer you to one, but finding one on your own is also a simple process.

Find a gastroenterologist

1. Direct your web browser to the American Gastroenterological Association's searchable database of doctors who treat IBS. See References for the link.

2. Click the globe labeled "Find a GI."

3. Enter your ZIP code and click "Go." You may also search by state.

4. Review the results from your search, including doctor's name, address, phone number and fax number.

5. Call the doctor of your choosing and make an appointment to discuss your IBS.

Other ways to find an IBS doctor

1. Ask friends, family or coworkers if they know a good IBS doctor.

2. Ask your regular physician for a list of IBS specialists whom he would recommend.

3. Post questions on online forums hosted by IBS patient advocacy groups, such as the IBS Self-Help and Support Group (link in Resources). Although the organization cannot officially recommend doctors, members of the support group who live near you may have suggestions for good IBS doctors.
