How to Replace a Hot Water Heater T&P Valve

Temperature and pressure relief valves, commonly referred to as T & P valves, are found on gas or electric water heaters. The temperature and pressure relief valve is responsible for releasing pressure in the water heater and maintaining a safe temperature to avoid overheating. If the valve is damaged or leaking, you should replace it for proper performance of your hot water heater. Replacement of the pressure relief valve can be done by a professional but you can save money by following a few steps and complete the project yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. How to Replace a Hot Water Heater T & P Valve

    • 1

Turn off the hot water heater by disconnecting the power if the hot water heater is electric. If your hot water heater is gas, turn the thermostat all the way down.

    • 2

Begin emptying the hot water from the tank by turning on a hot water faucet in your house and allowing the hot water to run cold. This is important to avoid any burns while working on your hot water heater.

    • 3

Turn off the water at the hot water heater by switching the cold water pipe to "off". You will see a lever on the pipe that will allow you to turn the water on and off.

    • 4

Raise the lever on the temperature and pressure relief valve to release the water pressure from the tank. Place a large bucket under the overflow pipe to catch the water being released from the overflow pipe while allowing the pressure to be released. Close the T&P valve once the water stops flowing.

    • 5

Use a pipe wrench to disconnect the overflow pipe from the T&P valve.

    • 6

Remove the T&P valve from the hot water heater by turning the valve counterclockwise with the pipe wrench. You may need to apply force to allow the valve to move, especially in older hot water heaters where the valve may be deteriorated.

    • 7

Use joint compound to lubricate the threads of the new T&P valve and screw the new valve onto the hot water heater by pushing the threaded end into place and turning it clockwise. Use the pipe wrench to tighten the T&P valve to ensure a secure fitting. Reinstall the overflow pipe by screwing it back into place using the pipe wrench.

    • 8

Turn on the water by switching the lever on the pipe to "on." Restore power to the hot water tank by reconnecting the electricity or resetting the thermostat to your desired temperature. Your hot water heater is now ready for use.
