Eye patches are often prescribed by ophthalmologists to either correct certain vision problems or to protect the eye after a surgical procedure. Children often wear eye patches to correct an eye problem called amblyopia. This requires children to wear the patch every day for a long period of time. Most adults need an eye patch after surgery. They may only need to wear the eye patch for a few days or weeks. It is important that the patch fits correctly so that it can do the job it is intended to do.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold the eye patch so that the oval is horizontal. It should be longer from left to right than from top to bottom.

  2. Step 2

Use your hand to hold the eye patch over the eye the doctor wants covered up.

  3. Step 3

Take your other hand and pull the elastic strap over your forehead and behind your head. One piece of the strap will rest above the ear next to the eye patch. The other strap will rest between the ear and the top of the forehead.

  4. Step 4

Adjust the eye patch to fit. There is a fitting device in the back of most eye patches. If yours does not have this, ignore this step. If a fitting device is present, just squeeze in the sides of the device. This opens up the device so that you can make the eye patch tighter or looser. Pull up the string to tighten the eye patch, or push the string back in to loosen the eye patch. Do this until the eye patch feels snug. Let go of the sides to lock the device back into place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wash your eye patch with a little dish soap and water if necessary.
  • Patches can cause a rash on your skin. Use some lotion or a cream each time you put on the patch to reduce the chances of getting a rash.
