The United States has hundreds of major metropolitan areas, and large cities. There are some areas of town that you need to be aware of when crime happens.

Like all cities there are many areas that are experiencing a higher rate of crime or type of crime. Knowing the types of crimes that are happening on a regular basis can help you to avoid buying a home or renting in a high crime neighborhood.

A crime map is simply a tool that allows you to see what types of crimes are happening. Here are some tips on how to benefit from using a crime map.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Local Crimes. Knowing where local crimes happen can help you try to pick the best possible neighborhood to buy your home or rent a home. If there is a certain type of crime that is happening around you in the area, you need to be aware.

  2. Step 2

Crime Map. This is a map that highlights all instances were the police have been called, and a police report was completed.

  3. Step 3

Police Report. All events that happen on the crime map have a police report number that can be checked on.

  4. Step 4

Theft. Problems with theft that are concentrated in one area always tells a much deeper story. Are the houses in the area hit within a certain time frame, perhaps more than once a week? Is there a drug dealer with an active operation close by? There may be people who specialize in certain homes that all have the same layout. This is common in cities where the same builder builds several neighborhoods.
