Learn how to Identify Symptoms of Alcohol Intolerance

Alcohol intolerance is characterized by an immediate reaction to the consumption of alcohol, not what we consider drunkenness, binge drinking, or hangover. Alcohol intolerance is common among Asians and is considered to be a natural inborn mechanism to prevent alcoholism. Some persons have an asthmatic reaction to alcohol, others have symptoms of allergy, and some simply get sick. The most dangerous of all alcohol intolerances is anaphylactic shock, which can be deadly if medical help is not sought immediately.

    • 1

Look out for flushing, rapid heartbeat, and a drop in blood pressure. In order to metabolize alcohol an enzyme called ALDH is required. A large number of Asians have ALDH deficiency and experience a syndrome called "oriental flushing syndrome," which is a combination of flushing, rapid heartbeat, and a drop in blood pressure.

    • 2

Keep an eye out for an asthmatic attack. Alcoholic drinks, and particularly wine, can cause asthmatic attacks in those with asthma and in persons who do not have the disease. This is attributable to additives in alcoholic beverages, especially wine.

    • 3

Watch for any allergy-like symptoms. Alcohol can trigger allergy-like symptoms. Congestion of the blood vessels of the nose resulting in sneezing and nasal drainage and congestion can be symptoms of alcohol intolerance.

    • 4

Take note of any digestive symptoms. Persons who are extremely sensitive to alcohol can experience digestive symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. These are not related to excessive drinking. It is advised that persons with these symptoms seek medical attention.

    • 5

Be on guard for anaphylactic shock. It is poorly understood why alcoholic beverages can produce anaphylactic shock in certain individuals. It is said that those with a true intolerance of alcohol can go into the state of anaphylaxis by drinking less than an ounce of alcohol. Anaphylaxis includes rash, stomach cramps, and difficulty breathing to the point of collapse. Anaphylactic shock can cause sudden death if the victim does not receive emergency medical treatment.
