A person's metabolic rate depends on age, sex and amount of muscle. Metabolism is basically the chemical process by which we break down food into muscular and other tissues or fat. Men generally have a faster metabolism than women, and younger individuals have a faster rate of metabolism than older individuals.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Build up your lean muscle mass. The reason men have faster metabolism than women is because men have a greater proportion of lean muscle tissue. The average male gains about a pound of fat a year after the age of 35. This is not caused a slowing of metabolism, but by loss of muscle mass and resulting slower metabolism. Fortunately, age does not decrease the ability to rebuild muscles.

  2. Step 2

Indulge in aerobic exercise. The rate of metabolism in men does not drop sharply until approximately age 70. The main solution for slower metabolism is exercise, such as walking, dancing or playing golf. Exercise burns calories during activity and continues to burn calories for an hour after stopping physical activity.

  3. Step 3

Increase your protein intake. Many proteins are the enzymes that catalyze the chemical reactions in metabolism. Men are advised to increase their proteind intake to add muscle. Protein also burns fat. It has been shown that individuals who increase their protein consumption burn more fat as fuel.

  4. Step 4

Eat small, frequent meals. It is commonly advised for both men and women to eat small, frequent meals to increase metabolism. The body reacts to prolonged hunger by slowing the metabolism to conserve energy. Frequent meals also require the body to expend a small amount to engergy to digest the food.

  5. Step 5

Drink Water. Like food, the body responds to thirst by hoarding water, depriving the body of the huge percentage of water required to perform all of the chemical processes in the body, including metabolism.
