How to Buy an Engagement Ring

Why would any man buy an engagement ring without his fiancé? While the woman's involvement does guarantee her the perfect engagement ring, it also ruins the element of surprise. Besides, the lucky lady isn't supposed to know how much her ring cost! Here's how to buy an engagement ring:

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at the jewelry she already has. Does she prefer yellow gold, white gold, or platinum? You can tell from what she wears on a day-to-day basis. Also note the shapes of her stones. Are most of them round, square, or heart-shaped? Round stones are the most popular choice, and the safest bet.

  2. Step 2

Head to the jewelry store with your fiancé-to-be, but not to buy an engagement ring. Say you might get her an everyday ring for the next coming holiday. She should show you her favorite styles at the jewelry store. Take note of what she likes before you buy an engagement ring.

  3. Step 3

Get her ring size at the jewelry store. If this would ruin the surprise, buy a loose diamond for the proposal. Then your fiancé (hopefully) can choose the setting and size herself. Unless she has extremely trustworthy friends, avoid asking them for help. It will only take a moment for one friend to spoil it all.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bigger but cheaper often indicates a lower-quality gem.
  • Open a line of credit at the jewelry store to hide the purchase.
  • Learn about carat, cut, clarity, and color before choosing the stone.
  • Make sure the width of the ring will complement the woman's fingers.
