Add the perfect finishing touch to your Christmas tree with a handmade copper star tree topper.

Whether your tree is an old-fashioned or primitive display or simply a family tree filled with handmade ornaments, this tree topper will add a homespun air secured high above country crafts, simple antiques, or folk art favorites.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • one roll of copper foil
  • star template OR
  • pne large star tin-punch pattern
  • tin shears
  • one small hammer
  • one small nail
  • phillip's head screw driver
  • one wheat sheaf OR
  • stalks of craft hay or corn silk
  • heavy-gauge craft wire
  • jewelry pliers
  • metal glue or strong all-purpose glue
  1. Step 1

Select a tin punch star template from a book or a free online pattern or draw your own the size and shape desired. Copy the original or cut the template directly from the page.

  2. Step 2

Roll out a sheet of copper foil and cut a piece slightly larger than the desired finished star. Secure the template to the copper surface using a little glue at the corners.

  3. Step 3

Using the hammer, nail, and screwdriver (for decorative points) follow the template's pattern of holes. If using your own, design, simply embellish the star with decorative punched holes, swirls (made by pressure from the nail) and star-like punches made with the screwdriver.

  4. Step 4

Once the star is punched, cut it out around its edges using the tin shears and taking care not to leave sharp edges.

  5. Step 5

Use the tin shears to cut a long piece of wire; fashion it into an ever-narrowing spiral using the jewelry pliers. Make sure the bottom is large enough to fit over the top of the tree; turn a loop at the top for gluing it to the back of the star.

  6. Step 6

Glue the star in place, then tie a sheaf of hay, corn silk, or wheat to the wire just below, letting the ends brush against the star's lowest point. Let dry, then place the star atop the tree.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a shinier finish, wind a small branch of Christmas garland around the tree topper's spiral and drape over the star's lower points.
  • Tuck clear or colored Christmas lights close to the star so the light shines through the holes and reflects off the copper surface.
  • Substitute other colors of foil for the traditional sheets of copper if desired.
