Lampshades can be changed to better match the room's decor. To determine the right dimensions, you must know both the lamp height and the harp height. The important dimensions of the lampshade are its height and the bottom diameter. In addition to selecting the right size, carefully consider the lampshade's color and fabric.       Measure the lamp's height, from the base to the bottom of the socket cap.

      Measure the height of the lamp harp.

      Select a lampshade that's within 1/2 inch of the lamp harp height, found in Step 2, and featuring a bottom diameter within 2 inches of the lamp height, found in Step 1. For example, if the lamp harp is 8 inches long and the lamp height is 10 inches, the lampshade's height should be between 7 1/2 and 8 1/2 inches, while the bottom diameter should be between 8 and 12 inches.

      Chose a lampshade with a shape that compliments your lamp's shape. For example, if you have a round lamp, choose a bell-shaped or cylindrical lampshade.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not select a lampshade that comes within 1 inch of the bulb because of the fire risk.
