How to Replace an A/C Compressor in a Pickup
Pickup trucks use similar air-conditioning systems as most other vehicles, except that they are typically larger. The compressor pumps Freon through the system, and this compressor can fail due to a lack of lubricant or bearing failure, requiring replacement. The average backyard mechanic can replace a compressor in a pickup in about an hour.

1
Evacuate the compressor and air-conditioning system of all Freon coolant by taking the truck to a collection facility. Most garages and oil change stations will collect the Freon with professional equipment, typically for free. Do not vent the Freon into the atmosphere.
-
2
Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt counterclockwise with a socket wrench.
-
-
3
Remove the Freon lines from the side of the compressor by turning the line bolts counterclockwise. A slight hiss may occur from latent pressure. Disconnect the compressor from the wiring harness by pulling the adapter plug from the terminal on top of the compressor unit.
-
4
Press firmly on the tension pulley arm to provide enough slack to slide the primary drive belt from the idle pulley wheel. Release the tension pulley arm, and there should now be enough slack to remove the belt from the A/C compressor.
-
5
Turn the compressor mount bolts counterclockwise, and slide them out. It may be necessary to hold the nut with a socket while turning the bolt head. Remove the compressor by manipulating it out of the mount arms.
-
6
Replace the compressor by positioning it into the mount arms and sliding the mount bolts into place. Turn the mount bolts and nuts in a clockwise direction until they are snug.
-
7
Reattach the wiring harness adapter plug to the compressor socket.
-
8
Reattach the drive belt by wrapping it over the compressor pulley wheel (groove side down), then pressing the tension pulley arm until there is enough slack to slide the belt underneath the idle pulley wheel. Release the tension pulley arm, and the belt will tighten around all of the pulleys.
-
9
Reconnect the Freon lines by turning the line nuts clockwise.
-
10
Reconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt clockwise.
-
11
Refill the air conditioning system by attaching a Freon can and valve to the low side Freon fill nipple and adding 1 to 3 pounds of Freon. You should take the truck to a garage or station to have this done with professional equipment.

Tips & Warnings
Use about 1/4 lubricant for every can of Freon.
Use extreme caution when working with Freon or a truck's electrical system.
