How to Hang Curtains on Drywall
You can hang curtains on drywall in several ways. Simple, non-mechanical curtain rods require two small hanging brackets that are nailed to the wall. These curtain rods are not heavy-duty rods and are typically recommended for hanging valances. Traverse rods with cord control are mechanical curtain rods with a manual open/close mechanism that you work with string. Curtains hang on a traverse rod via drapery hooks that are cheap and easy to work with. Installing a traverse rod will allow you to mechanically open and close a set of curtains quickly and easily. Use an electronic stud finder to locate the studs used to frame either the door or the window to be covered by curtains. Mark the boundaries revealed by using the stud finder.

Hold the traverse rod brackets against the wall within the marked stud boundaries. Mark the position of the bracket holes on the wall.

Ready an electric drill with a Phillips head drill bit. Fasten the first traverse rod bracket to the wall using the provided screws and the electric drill.

Measure the position of the first bracket compared to the window or door, and use the same measurements to fasten the other brackets to the wall. This will ensure that both of the brackets are in the same position on both sides of the window or door. Fasten the other bracket to the wall in the same manner as the first.

Use a tape measure to measure the distance between the brackets, and divide that distance in half. Mark the midpoint between the brackets on the wall. Use an electronic stud finder to locate a stud in the midpoint area. Long traverse rods are provided with a center support bracket. Mount the center support bracket onto the wall using the same method used to mount the other brackets.

Slide the traverse rod into the mounting brackets until you hear a "click" sound. Allow the pull cord to hang down the wall. Mount the plastic cord guide to the wall using the provided hardware. If it can be mounted to a stud, it will be more stable for a longer period of time.

Insert the drapery hooks into the curtains where the curtains are pleated. Hang the curtains on the traverse rod beginning with the master carrier at the center of the traverse rod, and work back towards the mounting brackets. The final three drapery hooks hang directly in the mounting brackets.
