How to Create a Platform Bed Cheap

If you are in the market for a new bed and want to keep costs down, consider building a platform bed. A platform bed has a base that consists of a raised horizontal surface that supports just a mattress. A platform bed traditionally sits close to the ground and eliminates the need for a box spring or mattress support. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the pieces of plywood on a flat surface even with each other.

    • 2

Make measurements at 2-foot intervals along the seam of the boards.

    • 3

Place a piece of 4-by-4 at the 2-foot measurements so that it straddles the seam. Screw the 4-by-4s into place with four screws from the top.

    • 4

The 5-foot 9-inch pieces should be in between the 8-foot pieces and be even with the edges of the longer boards. Make sure the corners are at right angles with the carpenter's square and screw the frame together.

    • 5

Place the piece of plywood on top of the frame so that the pieces of 2-by-4 are inside the frame and touching the ground. Make sure the plywood fits evenly with the edges and screw it into place along the perimeter.

    • 6

Stain the platform with the stain of your choice. Once the stain is dry, place a mattress on top of the frame.

Tips & Warnings

  • This platform bed should fit up to a queen mattress. If you need a bigger mattress, get longer boards but follow the same process.

  • The frame with the plywood is not enough to hold the weight of a person plus a mattress. The 4-by-4s under the plywood are needed for support
