How to Create a Platform Bed Cheap
If you are in the market for a new bed and want to keep costs down, consider building a platform bed. A platform bed has a base that consists of a raised horizontal surface that supports just a mattress. A platform bed traditionally sits close to the ground and eliminates the need for a box spring or mattress support. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Two 8-foot pieces of 2-by-12
- Two 5-foot 9-inch pieces of 2-by-12
- Two pieces of 1-inch plywood 8 feet by 3 feet
- Four pieces of 11-1/2 inch 4-by-4
- Screw gun
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Wood screws
- Carpenter's square
- Wood stain
- Paint brush

Place the pieces of plywood on a flat surface even with each other.

Make measurements at 2-foot intervals along the seam of the boards.

Place a piece of 4-by-4 at the 2-foot measurements so that it straddles the seam. Screw the 4-by-4s into place with four screws from the top.

The 5-foot 9-inch pieces should be in between the 8-foot pieces and be even with the edges of the longer boards. Make sure the corners are at right angles with the carpenter's square and screw the frame together.

Place the piece of plywood on top of the frame so that the pieces of 2-by-4 are inside the frame and touching the ground. Make sure the plywood fits evenly with the edges and screw it into place along the perimeter.

Stain the platform with the stain of your choice. Once the stain is dry, place a mattress on top of the frame.

Tips & Warnings
This platform bed should fit up to a queen mattress. If you need a bigger mattress, get longer boards but follow the same process.
The frame with the plywood is not enough to hold the weight of a person plus a mattress. The 4-by-4s under the plywood are needed for support
