Patio covers are an ideal way to protect furniture from rain and snow, create a shaded enclosure or platform and offer a new addition to a home. With a variety of choices from which to choose, you'll want to consider how and when (seasonally) you intend to use the patio cover and how much you're willing to spend. Manufactured and custom patio covers are available from local retailers and online stores.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Evaluate your patio layout and decide which patio cover offers the most coverage, shade and protection against the elements. Depending on the design, adjustable patio covers can be adjusted to meet the needs of changing weather.

  2. Step 2

Consider the construction of the patio cover. Aluminum, wrought iron, vinyl and wood patio covers can vary considerably in terms of construction, size and color. Wood patios are designed as an extension and improvement of the home and provide a durable platform for entertaining guests and enjoying outdoor views. Be aware of possible rotting, termites, water stains with wood. Schedule regular maintenance and re-stain a wood patio to minimize wear. Other materials, including aluminum, wrought iron and vinyl, are not subject to rotting; however, rust stains can occur with iron.

  3. Step 3

Decide between a permanent and a removable patio cover. Retractable awnings and fabric canopies are removable while pergolas, arbors and gazebos are permanent.

  4. Step 4

Evaluate the terms of the warranty. Ask if the warranty is for the life of the patio or if a term is assigned. Ask if wear and tear, such as cracking, chipping, peeling, rotting or fading, is covered under the warranty.

Tips & Warnings
  • Custom patio covers are generally more expensive than manufactured patios. Basic patio covers are the least expensive and can range from umbrellas to canopies.
  • Patio covers can be purchased from outdoor furniture and home improvement stores.
