How to Make Dull Wood Floors Shiny Again

Hardwood floors add elegance to any home, but over time consistent foot traffic will wear away the finish and eventually your wood floors can lose their luster and become dull. Hardwood floors require routine care in order to maintain their shine. It is often recommended to use a combination of vinegar and water to bring back shine to wood floors, but the acids in vinegar could potentially damage the wood. For a quick and easy way to properly make dull wood floors shiny again, it is best to purchase a good quality wood floor refinishing product. Trewax, Armstrong and Basic Coatings all manufacture a wide range of wood floor refinishing products. A different product can be used depending on the level of sheen you want. Instructions

    • 1

Clean your wood floors before refinishing. Sweep and dust-mop the floors. Mop the floors with wood floor cleaner and make sure the floor is clear of all dirt, oil and buildup.

    • 2

Refinish your floors with wax for satin finishes. Trewax makes several wood floor waxes. Spread a thin, even layer of wax using a clean, soft cloth. Rub the wax onto the floor, moving in the same direction as the wood grain. Allow the wax to dry for one hour. Buff the wax with a floor buffer or another clean, soft cloth.

Refinish your floors with a water-based wood floor finish for gloss finishes. Water-based wood floor finishes are more permanent than wax and will give your wood floor a resilient and gleaming topcoat. Apply one to two coats of Trewax One Step Wood Floor Finish or Armstrong Bruce One Step Wood Floor Finish with a clean, soft cloth. Apply with the wood grain and with smooth strokes that all go in the same direction. Allow the finish to dry for one hour before applying a second coat. This finish will dry clear and hard and does not need to be buffed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Refinish your floors at least twice a year to maintain the shine.
