How to Create an Underwater Mural

Underwater spaces, such as pools and fish tanks, can quickly become boring and mundane. A solution may be to paint a mural on the surface of the pool or tank. However, creating an underwater mural can be a challenging task. As your work area is initially surrounded by water, the process is quite arduous and at times daunting to complete. However, the effects may be a greatly enhanced water area, with a unique artistic quality.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the water from the area you are painting.

    • 2

Sketch designs for the mural. Determine whether you will focus on a more traditional mural design, such as a Diego Rivera--type mural, or a more abstract or modern design. Carefully choose the colors in your design, as the pool water and design will affect the mural's hue (see David E. Callahan's guide in the References section).

    • 3

Purchase the appropriate colors. To avoid human toxicity, be sure to use a pool-specific paint brand for areas that people will be using (i.e., Insel-X pool paints). If the mural is for an area where fish will be living, make sure the paint is nontoxic to the fish.

    • 4

      Paint your mural.

    • 5

Refill the water in your area.
