  1. How to Change a Dead Bolt Lock

      Remove the striker plate from the door jamb by using a screwdriver to unfasten the screws.

      Undo the cover plate of your deadbolt by unfastening the screws in the plate with a screwdriver and pulling the cover plate straight back to remove from the door.

      Detach the cover plate on the opposite side of the door by pulling it straight back and removing from the door.

      Locate the door plate with the deadbolt on the side of the door and unfasten the screws holding the plate in place, then pull it straight out and remove from the door.

      Slide the new deadbolt and plate into the side of the door and fasten it in place by securing the screws in the side of the door with a screwdriver.

      Place the cover plate on one side of the door and the other plate on the opposite side, then thread one of the screws into the opposite plate by hand until it is connected to the plate and repeat for the second screw.

      Tighten the cover plates by using a screwdriver until the plates are firmly connected flat against the door.

      Install the striker plate on the door jamb by fastening it with two screws to the jamb.

      Close the door and test the new deadbolt by turning the door lock to verify the bolt moves freely and secures the door, then turn the deadbolt back and open the door.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the deadbolt is not sliding freely when it's installed, turn the screws on the cover plate back just a bit to loosen up the mechanism.
