How to Relocate a Storage Shed

Garden sheds that are placed in the back of a yard may need to be moved or relocated when another landscape project needs to use the space where the shed was located. Moving a garden shed involves removing it from its base, if any, and then transporting it to the new location. Most garden sheds are anchored to the ground, which will require removing the anchors before you can move the shed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Metal tubes
  • Rope
  • Pry bars
  1. Step 1

Find a location where you want to move the shed and determine the path that you want to take when moving the shed.

  2. Step 2

Check the shed to make sure that none of the framing is loose and that it is still structurally sound.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the new location for the shed. Check to see if the ground is level so the shed will sit flat. You can also construct a new base or platform for the shed.

  4. Step 4

Remove all the contents of the shed before you attempt to move it. This will not only make the shed lighter but will lessen the chance of damaging anything inside during transport.

  5. Step 5

Insert pry bars on the underside of the shed and lift up to separate it from the ground.

  6. Step 6

Place metal tubes under the shed to act as rollers if the shed is too heavy to drag. Place one tube under the front of the shed. Pull and push on the shed until it is on the tube and then place another tube under the front of the shed. Repeat this process until the shed is sitting on top of the metal tubes.

  7. Step 7

Drag the shed to its new location by pulling it with a rope. Tie a rope to the bottom front of the shed and pull on the rope to begin dragging the shed.

  8. Step 8

Take the metal tubes from the back of the shed and place them in the front as the shed is being rolled across the yard.

Tips & Warnings
  • Two or more people may be needed to move a garden shed to a new location.
  • Make any repairs to the shed that are necessary before it is moved.
  • A truck with a hitch can be used to drag the shed across the yard.
  • A shed that is not structurally sound may fall apart when trying to move it forcefully.
