Wood flooring is one of the most carefree choices a homeowner can make, but like all floors it is subject to spills and stains. If your flooring crisis is due to chewing gum that has been dropped or tracked in, don't despair. There is a quick solution to this sticky situation, and you probably already have the items needed to remove the chewing gum from your floorboards.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Zippered freezer bag
  • 3 ice cubes
  • Hand towel or wash cloth
  • Plastic putty knife
  1. Step 1

Insert three ice cubes into a zippered freezer bag and seal the bag.

  2. Step 2

Lay a small towel or washcloth over the chewing gum area and place the freezer bag of ice directly over the gum spot. Leave in place for 10 minutes. The cloth will absorb any condensation from the ice and protect your floor.

  3. Step 3

Remove the ice and cloth from the floor.

  4. Step 4

Scrape the chewing gum off the floor, using a plastic putty knife held at a 45 degree angle. Take care not to gouge the floor. The gum will pop off easily. If you are working on a large area and the gum begins to soften repeat the freezing process.

  5. Step 5

Clean the area where the chewing gum was stuck, using your usual floor cleaning method.

Tips & Warnings
  • A plastic knife or old credit card can be used if you don't have a plastic putty knife.
  • If you don't have ice cubes handy you can freeze one half cup of water in the zipper bag.
  • Do not use ice directly on a floorboard, as it will cause water damage.
